Meta Announces Crackdown for Unoriginal Creators on Facebook, Takes Down 10 million Accounts

      Meta Fights Duplicate Content

Following YouTube, Meta has also taken the initiative to reduce copied and inauthentic content on the social media platform Facebook, supporting genuine creators. To date, nearly 10 million accounts have been deleted from the platform for sharing duplicate or spammy content.

Additionally, Meta has also indicated its step toward demonetizing accounts with unoriginal content. Highlighting the rising issue of spammy content distribution on the platform, Meta has stated, “We’re introducing stronger measures to reduce unoriginal content on Facebook and ultimately protect and elevate creators sharing original content.

Hence, it is assumed that Meta is taking significant steps to acknowledge and support authenticity and original creators.

      What does this Crackdown Mean?

Elimination of unoriginal content has been a long-term initiative by Meta to address duplicated posts and spammy accounts on Facebook. Meta has profoundly observed the upload of the same content, whether it is a meme or video. In this regard, many accounts copy content and upload it while pretending to be the original creator.

According to Meta, such functionalities are nothing but an act of stealing content that contributes to decreased user experience and acknowledgment of genuine creators. In the process of removing content duplication on Facebook, Meta has taken action against over 500,000 spammy behaviors on the platform in the first two quarters of 2025. Accounts with such inauthentic content will not be able to make money even after meeting the engagement criteria.

Meta’s aim to reduce spammy content on Facebook is to make its feed more relevant for the audience, boost user experience, and help authentic creators get the appropriate visibility.

What Does Meta mean by Unoriginal Content?

The reuse and repurposing of another creator’s content without providing them with the necessary credits can be considered unoriginal content. Such activities are often undertaken for the sake of enhanced engagement and monetization.

In this regard, following an idea, such as in commentary videos, without adding uniqueness can also be considered unauthentic content. Repetitive content without meaningful enhancement can also be an activity of unoriginal content.

There is no mention of AI-generated content in Meta’s announcement. Nevertheless, combining random AI-generated clips, lazy watermarks, unoriginal storytelling, and AI-generated low-value captions can lead to the distribution of spammy content.

Posts and Accounts to be Excluded from Crackdown-

Meta is to exempt posts and accounts that revolve around reaction, commentary, remix, and trend participation from the crackdown. However, adding uniqueness is necessary on every occasion.

      How to Track Account Activity?

The basic indication of original content is the “Original by” tag with each video and reel on Facebook following the name of the genuine creator. Apart from that, Meta has also introduced a Professional Dashboard for Facebook users to track post activities and distribution challenges.

If any post is considered to be unauthentic, Facebook will automatically impose reach and monetization penalties. In the Professional Dashboard, one can check the reasons for the same. Additionally, the Support tab on Facebook can also guide individuals in understanding whether their profile is at risk, if monetization has been suspended, and other relevant aspects.

How to Stay Away from Meta’s Crackdown on Facebook?

The best practices to stay away from the crackdown, gain monetization, boost content potential, and earn money on Facebook are-

      • Prioritize creating original content: Content distribution on Facebook will double if profiles create and upload original content.
      • Integrate meaningful and valuable enhancements: Content with necessary permissions requires meaningful enhancements, such as creative voiceovers, commentary, and editing. Ensure to mention appropriate credits.
      • Adopt storytelling: Offering greater value through original storytelling can enhance the user experience and increase the chances of gaining wider visibility.
      • Do not include watermarks: Using third-party watermarks indicates copying content from other sources. Hence, avoiding such elements can be beneficial.
      • Write value-added high-quality captions: The original content must be accompanied by valuable captions and hashtags. According to Meta, captions with limited capital letters, no links, and not more than five hashtags perform efficiently.
