Google Adds AI Mode to Chrome’s Address Bar Amid Major AI Updates

Google AI Mode to Chrome browser

Google is launching AI Mode, its popular AI search feature, in Chrome’s address bar, allowing you to ask long questions and perform searches in AI Mode.

Google marks this as the most significant update in the history of Chrome. Initially, the feature will be available for users in the US who browse in English, and thereafter, plans to expand globally. The new rollout is part of Google’s recent AI updates, announced in a blog post by Mike Torres, VP of Product Chrome.

Intelligent Search is Here: AI Mode in the Omnibox

The update integrates AI Mode directly into Chrome’s address bar (Omnibox) on your desktop. Users can ask longer, conversational queries, follow-up questions, and get contextual responses without leaving the page.

Alongside, another interesting feature is the page-aware prompts offered in Chrome, where AI-generated summaries and recommendations of the web page content will appear in the side panel.

Robby Stein from Google wrote on X, “This means you can use AI Mode to ask complex, multi-part questions right from the same place you already search and browse the web from Chrome. And you can quickly ask follow-up questions and explore more content from across the web.”

      The All-New Gemini in Chrome

At the core of the update is Google’s flagship AI Model, Gemini, rolling out for Mac and Windows users in the US. You can ask Gemini to summarize or compare information across multiple websites, remember where you were before, and integrate with apps such as YouTube, Calendar, and Maps.

For example, if you are looking for a particular point in a YouTube video, you can ask Gemini in Chrome, and it will take you there.

Alongside this, Gemini will be developing agentic capabilities in the next few months with enhanced features. It can schedule appointments and order groceries directly into the browser. Users have complete control and can terminate tasks at any time.

      Mitigating Scams with Gemini Nano

Google is also expanding how AI is used to navigate the threats and malicious activities on the web- Safe Browsing with Gemini Nano to identify fake viruses and fake giveaways. Chrome will also reduce spammy notifications.

Alongside, Chrome will serve as a password helper that lets you change weak passwords or change passwords for participating sites with a single click.

Google is transforming search and interaction with the web by integrating AI Mode into the omnibox. Instead of just typing queries, users can explore topics conversationally, compare different options, and get deep insights without clicking through multiple pages.

The update also opens up new possibilities to publishers and content creators, as AI-based overviews could impact how readers find and evaluate content.

AI Mode is continuing to expand to more locations within Google. There are questions that may get a default search one day!
