Apple has introduced a significant new feature that lets iPhone and Apple Watch users in the US store a digital version of their US passport in the Apple Wallet app. This is indeed an excellent update for users, as carrying manual passports is no longer a job. The new digital ID will help to verify their identity at TSA checkpoints across 250+ airports for domestic travel.
The new Digital ID feature is introduced with iOS 26, broadening Apple Walletโs capabilities beyond payment cards and driverโs licenses, taking another step towards replacing the physical wallet.
The Digital ID does not replace a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings. It offers an easy alternative for travelers who donโt have a REAL ID-compliant driverโs license or state ID. This feature is currently available in 12 US states and Puerto Rico, with plans to expand further.
The following are the prerequisites to create and show your DigitalID:
- An iPhone 11 or above version
- Apple Watch Series 6 or above
- FaceID or TouchID with Bluetooth on
- A valid US passport
- An Apple account with two-factor authentication on
Hereโs how users can create a Digital ID on their iPhone or Apple Watch:
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Tap the โ+โ button
- Select Driver's License or ID Cards, then tap Digital ID.
- Follow on-screen instructions
- The setup process includes scanning the passport photo page and embedded page, taking a live selfie, and completing facial movements for verification.
- Once approved, the Digital ID appears in Wallet and can sync with the Apple Watch.
At TSA checkpoints, users can double-click the side or Home button to open Wallet, select Digital ID, and hold the device near an identity reader. A prompt displays the information being shared, and users can confirm it with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. The TSA agent does not need to handle the device, providing a private, contactless experience.
A Word About Privacy and Data Security
Regarding security, Apple focuses on privacy and security, stating that โIDs are encrypted and stored locally on the device.โ The company cannot see when or where users show their ID or share data, and it commits to Apple Payโs privacy model.
The Future of Apple towards this move is bigger and brighter. It has plans to expand the use of Digital ID beyond airports. With its Verify with Wallet API, users can verify their age, venues, and more, without sharing any other personal details.
This marks a major Apple rollout, making iPhone the top digital wallet, making travel and identity verification easier, and focusing on privacy.
