ChatGPT is now going beyond being just a conversational AI chatbot. OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s capabilities by swiftly launching an App Store directory within ChatGPT. The company is now inviting developers, businesses, and more to build apps inside the conversation. With the new update, developers can now submit apps for review and potential publication to ChatGPT.
A Move Towards Building Apps
The major shift moves on OpenAI’s October rollout of early partner integration with platforms such as Spotify, Expedia, Canva, Zillow, and DoorDash. Initially, just a pilot has now pushed its limits into a broader ecosystem where developers can build and publish apps inside ChatGPT.
The company said, “Apps expand ChatGPT conversations by bringing in new context and allow users take action like order groceries, turn an outline into a slide deck, or look for an apartment.”
A New Platform for Developers
The App Directory is accessible via ChatGPT’s tools menu or chatgpt.com/apps. Developers can simply build and publish apps without leaving the conversational interface.
However, OpenAI’s App SDK is still in beta and provides tools for building apps for ChatGPT users. These apps can perform various actions, such as ordering groceries, finding properties, discovering music, and more, all powered by AI.
Once developers build the apps, they can submit for review and approval at OpenAI’s developer platform, where even the status can be tracked.
According to OpenAI’s statement, “Apps that meet our quality and safety standards are eligible to be published in the app directory, and apps that resonate with users may be featured prominently in the directory or as recommended by ChatGPT in the future.”
The new update marks OpenAI's first step in building a solid platform for developers. In the coming days, the tech giant plans to strengthen the ChatGPT app ecosystem, making it easier for developers and everyone else.
