      Meta to Rely on AI to Cover 90% of Its Risk Assessment Activities

      '}}

      Meta will soon replace its human-driven risk assessment procedures with AI-enabled automation. According to NPR, the non-profit media organization, the tech giant plans to shift 90% of their manual risk assessment activities to AI.

      For a long time, Meta has been dependent on human risk evaluators before releasing any products or features to global users. However, from now on, with AI integration, Meta products will be self-empowered to assess risks and make judgments.

      Post implementation, Meta product teams will reportedly need to complete a questionnaire with an "instant decision" after completing a project. The AI-powered program will then assess risk elements and identify the requirements to tackle them. However, product teams will evaluate and verify whether the automated process successfully meets the requirements before the launch of a product or feature.

      Meta's Shift to AI for Risk Assessment:

      Contradicting their previous assertion to allow AI to assess 'low risk' procedures, Meta is now ready to incorporate AI to evaluate AI safety, youth risk, and integrity. While the firm is aiming to establish a fast and efficient framework for releases and application updates with AI, the shift can impose significant privacy challenges.

      According to NPR's report, "Inside Meta, the change is being viewed as a win for product developers, who will now be able to release app updates and features more quickly. But current and former Meta employees fear the new automation push comes at the cost of allowing AI to make tricky determinations about how Meta's apps could lead to real world harm."

      In April, the firm introduced a series of global policies concerning content moderation activities. The decisions made, specifically highlighted the possible consequences of depending on automated detection methodologies of policy violations across the globe.

      Nevertheless, Meta had previously ended its human-led fact-checking tasks by integrating content-moderating models and crowd-sourced Community Notes. Notably, the technology failed miserably to detect incorrect information and misinformation.

      What are the Possible Consequences?

      Meta's shift of 90% of human-driven risk assessment activities to AI indicates major algorithmic changes in the upcoming months. This may significantly impact how content has been uploaded, shared, and managed over Meta's platforms- Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

      Experts are speculating about major threats to user data privacy as an impact of Meta's AI-driven risk assessment methodologies. Additionally, ever since AI took over many of the manual activities within companies, the graph of job losses has gotten higher. Similarly, Mata's shift to AI for risk assessment may lead to multiple job losses.

      Though Meta has continuously made efforts to strengthen its risk assessment and management frameworks, AI integration can bring both advantages and threats as well in this regard.
