Google is testing AI Contribution Pilot, a new feature, wherein the company is paying publishers for using their content within Gemini, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. This means publishers get paid when their content contributes to the AI-generated responses for these platforms. AI Contribution Pilot is a feature in Google Search Console and is offered to a limited number of publishers while it is in the early testing phase.
What is Google Paying For?
As per DigiDay reports, Google is quietly scaling a pay-per-value AI licensing scheme for publishers. The pilot lets publishers earn money when their content contributes to AI-generated responses shown to users in participating products.
AI Contribution focuses on the stage where web content has a huge impact on the response. Confirming facts or being linked after an answer is generated doesn’t qualify for AI contribution. According to Google, publishers can earn from the Gemini app, AI Overviews, and AI Mode.
- Accrue earnings for your content: Pages can accrue earnings when they contribute significantly to Google's AI-generated responses.
- Manage your participation: Accept the Program Terms to start earning, update payment details, or cancel your participation at any time in Search Console settings.
- Track your earnings: Check the history of how much your content has accrued in earnings.
- Track your payments: Check the status of funds transferred to your bank account, which can differ from your estimated earnings.

Publishers participating in the program can track their monthly earnings and last payment using the AI Contribution pilot report in Search Console. They can also manage payment details or opt out of the program at any time by changing the Search Console Settings.
Google has confirmed this, stating: “The scheme is an early-stage learning pilot to test how best to reward high-quality content on top of the traffic and tools it already provides to publishers.”
Early Reactions from Publishers
The good news is that at least dozens of publishers have reportedly been approached, and the program appears attractive to small and mid-size publishers and extends beyond news organizations; though DigiDay couldn’t confirm the total number of participants.
What Does This Mean Ahead?
With the new update, it’s clear that Google’s AI Contribution Pilot adds a payment prompt inside the SEO tool for professionals who use it every day. It’s here to create a direct payment model for publishers whose content boosts AI answers, but its long-term reach, payout levels, and wider impact on the publishing industry remain uncertain.
