Microsoft Fixes Over 1,400 Vulnerabilities in its October 2026 Patch Tuesday Security Update

      October 2026 Patch Tuesday

Microsoft has released its October 2026 Patch Tuesday security updates, addressing more than 1,400 vulnerabilities across its products. The release includes three zero-day vulnerabilities, one of which attackers have actively exploited. The update also introduces a new risk-based grouping approach to help organizations prioritize security fixes.

According to BleepingComputer, Microsoft addressed 1,411 vulnerabilities in this month’s release. The Hacker News reported a slightly different total of 1,413 vulnerabilities. Both reports identify the actively exploited Windows Shell flaw as a significant concern. Check out the full report of the patched vulnerabilities here.

Notably, the October release sets a new record for Microsoft’s monthly security updates. It has highlighted the surging challenge of identifying, assessing, and fixing vulnerabilities across enterprise software environments.

October 2026 Patch Tuesday Traced Critical Vulnerabilities Span Multiple Categories

Microsoft’s October security update identified several vulnerability types, including privilege escalation, remote code execution, and information disclosure. The update highlighted 70 critical vulnerabilities, with 57 remote code execution, 11 elevation of privileges, and two spoofing. BleepingComputer has offered a breakdown of the identified flaws based on their categories:

      • 677 elevation-of-privilege vulnerabilities allowing attackers to attain permissions beyond their authorized access.
      • 317 remote code execution vulnerabilities enabling attackers to execute code on affected systems.
      • 254 information disclosure vulnerabilities exposing information that should remain protected.
      • 73 denial-of-service vulnerabilities disrupting the availability of affected services.
      • 40 security feature bypass vulnerabilities undermining existing security protections.
      • 28 spoofing vulnerabilities enabling attackers to impersonate legitimate entities or resources.

Microsoft Identified Actively Exploited Zero-Day Vulnerabilities:

Microsoft listed three zero-day flaws with no official fixes previously. However, the company patched them in the October 2026 Patch Tuesday security update. They include one actively exploited and two publicly disclosed vulnerabilities.

      • CVE-2026-96951

CVE-2026-96951 is a Windows Shell security feature bypass vulnerability that has been actively exploited. Microsoft confirmed that attackers have exploited the flaw, although it has not disclosed detailed information about the attacks.

      • CVE-2026-108398

CVE-2026-108398 is a .NET Framework security feature bypass flaw that has been publicly disclosed. Its successful exploitation could allow an authenticated attacker to bypass Windows Defender Application Control restrictions.

      • CVE-2026-92707

It is a MessagePack-CSharp denial-of-service vulnerability and a publicly disclosed flaw that improperly controlled sequential memory allocation in .NET. It enabled unauthorized attackers to deny service over a network.

Microsoft Unveiled Risk Cohorts for Patch Prioritization

Microsoft has introduced an experimental approach called risk cohorts alongside security fixes. The method groups related vulnerabilities according to the assessments customers need to perform. Microsoft published 15 risk cohorts for October, including Windows filesystems, Office documents, graphics processing, kernel privilege boundaries, and update services.

The October release also marks an important support deadline for certain Windows editions. Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro reached the end of updates on October 13, 2026. Microsoft confirmed that the October 2026 Patch Tuesday security release is the final update available for these editions. Therefore, users must upgrade to a supported Windows version to continue receiving security and non-security updates.
